Fear of manual penalties from unnatural link growth

I am terrified of getting a manual action from Google because my backlink profile looks a bit too "manufactured" right now. Most of my links are from similar types of sites and I know I need to diversify, but I am not sure how to do it safely. I want to add some natural-looking community links to the mix, but I don't want to make things worse by doing it incorrectly. Does anyone have experience with cleaning up a profile by adding more diverse, organic-looking signals?

Diversification is definitely the best defense against any potential algorithm updates that target specific link types. I started participating in link building forums to learn how to layer my profile with different kinds of signals so it doesn't look so one-dimensional to the crawlers. It adds that layer of "social proof" that search engines love to see when they are evaluating a site's credibility. It is definitely worth the extra effort to stay safe in the long run.
